Happy Birthday, Chris!

Can it really be 43 years since Chris entered our lives? He was born in Provo when Rulon was a student at BYU. I had been teaching 1st Grade until we found that we were expecting a little surprise. We lived in a basement apartment in typical student housing. But we were so happy! Somehow we made it through - lived on love and vegetables from my parents' garden.
Here is my favorite picture of Chris and his family - on the steps on the St. George Temple after they had been sealed as a family. Nothing can compare with that day!
Dad (after a foot operation) and Chris at Grandpa and Grandma Gibson's gravesite.
Chris, Grandpa and Holden
Chris and Krissy - before or after a child was born - may have been Sloane because Holden was born at home (another story)!
Chris, we love you and are proud of you! We are so glad that you have blessed our lives. You are generous to all and are so diligent in your callings. We hope you have a wonderful day!

Happy Birthday to Jill!

Happy Birthday to our Jill! 36 years ago today, she was born. She was our third child, our first girl! I remember that day very well as I feel that her life was spared with the help of an aggressive doctor and Heavenly Father's intervention. She was breech and it was a difficult birth. But she was worth it all and has been a delight ever since. She is an optimist and has a very pleasant, pleasing personality. She is a peacmaker. But she is also daring as shown by the picture below. She and Kim travelled across the country to visit us this summer - with 6 kids in tow! I don't seem to have a current family picture scanned. But here are Jill, Dave and Scottie and Mason . Tanna is also now in the Shanks family.
And here is little Scottie and Jill. She loves children and is so good with them. She has been a First Grade teacher for many years. Anyone who can do that is a saint!
We love you, Jill! Have a great birthday and know that we are proud of you and what you are accomplishing in your life. You have always championed the underdog and many count you as a friend. May your next years be happy - and we know they will because you are a happy person!

Creature from the Woods!

Scottie and Jill, this is especially for you. Last year, they saw this coyote/doglike creature on our back lawn. We didn't get a picture of it then. This year we have seen it a few times and finally got these pictures. It seems to be a mixture of a couple of things. I looked it up in my wildlife book and can't see anything that is exactly like it. It seems that the one last year had more rounded ears. We think this is the young one and the mother hovers nearby. Dad had to go and chase it away. It runs off into the woods. It comes out in broad daylight. Too bad it isn't an insect or Dan would identify it immediately! Any guesses, anyone?

Our Trip to Galena

Dad - enjoying the cornfields of Illinois!
Joyce Smith and I in the beautiful Illinois countryside.
Here we are in the Cave of the Mounds - picture was taken by our guide.
Here are Joyce and Paul near the Cave of the Mounds.
Paul and Joyce inside the cave.
This cave is big but I think Timpanogos is bigger. And you just walk right into this one - no hiking to it!

This tells the story of how the cave was discovered - in 1939 under a farmer's field!
And here is our beautiful Steamboat House - a bed and breakfast. We stayed here one night.
The front view of this impressive old home - completely restored and beautifully decorated.
Here are Paul, Joyce and I relaxing on the huge porch.
This is a cobblestone street that goes straight up hill - must have been hard for the horses!
Downtown Galena - located on the Mississippi - an old steamboat town - many of the old homes are restored.
Lots of shopping to be done!

We had so much fun that we are going to do another trip at the end of September - we will go up to Door County - should be lots of beautiful leaves in color by then.
