Happy 33 to Kim!

Tomorrow, May 30, Kim will be 33! I was 33 in 1976 when she was born - our Bi-Centennial baby! She was blessed on July 4, 1976 on the 200th birthday of our country.

Here she is as a baby - cute and round and chubby. She was our fourth child and evened up our family to two boys and two girls. (Two more girls would join us later.)
Kim was a wonderful child and a great student. She had lots of friends and was fun to be around. She graduated from Brigham Young University and taught 2nd grade in Provo for about 5 years. In the meantime, she met and married Steve Asp.
She got her masters degree from Utah State University while going through a difficult first trimester of pregnancy with Emily. When Emily was a baby, Kim stopped teaching and began her preschool - Let's Learn Preschool in the basement of their home in American Fork. It has been very successful. Miss Kim is a wonderful teacher and has given many little ones a chance to have a great start to their school years by providing an econominal choice for parents.

Now, there are three little Asp girls - all E's! Emily is 6, Ella is 4 and Eden is 4 months.
Kim, we love you! You are a schemer and a dreamer but a very practical one. You have ideas that you actually make come alive. Your abilities and talents never cease to amaze us as your parents. Happy Birthday!

Cavans' Vacation - Our Staycation!

We had so much fun with Paige, Dan and Natalia! We saw things (for the last time perhaps) that were meaningful to Paige since she spent her growing up years here in Naperville. Here are just a few pictures to show some of the things we did. You can get a better view by seeing Paige's blog.

Here Natalia washes the rental car.
Dan and Natalia on the merry-go-round at the mall.
Natalia playing on the climbing equipment at the mall.
Here she is riding in a pretend car.
Here she is at the top of one of the many slides at one of the many parks we visited.
Dan pushing his daughter at the Riverwalk Park.
And again (Natalia's favorite word)!
Paige and Natalia at the pet store coveting the little puppy that looked like Ben.
"Can't we have him?" (This was Paige speaking!) He's just too cute (or was it a she?)!
Mother and daughter love dogs.
Ready for the "zoo" - really, just some animals and birds - but fun anyway.
And here she is EATING! She was amazing, We are used to picky eaters but she would try most things and then asked for more!
We miss them and wish others could come "one last time" but most did that last year. We will be able to have many more fun times in the future when we are nearer to all 20 of our grandchildren.

Serving Our Country

I was watching the Memorial Eve Commemoration in Washington, D.C. last night. It was inspiring and well done. I began thinking about how we serve our country. So many have fought and died in wars. They gave their all for the belief in freedom. These past two wars have been called the "Wars of the Wounded". The advanced medical help and technology has kept many alive who would not have survived in earlier wars. This is causing tremendous problems for these severly wounded men and women and their families. The cost of their care and the emotional toll is astronomical.
Rulon has been working with veterans since he was an intern in Palo Alto at the V.A. Hospital there. In Chicago, he has worked with thousands and their families since 1972. Now he is retiring July 31st. Others will take over this great responsibility of giving help and hope to those who suffer.
I would like to pay tribute to Rulon today. He has helped so many during his career. He truly cares about veterans and can handle the meanest, toughest guys. He has kept many alive when they were ready to give up. He has helped with the family issues that have resulted because of the effects of war.
However, I am not the only one who has paid tribute to him lately. One veteran gave him this hat that says "Veteran of Veterans" on it. Another gave him the plaque below which states:

Dr. Gibson
Grateful appreciation
For a Wonderful
Doctor & A Good Friend
For Taking That Extra Step,
For Going That Extra Mile
For Being An Extraordinary Individual
From a Grateful Vet

I recently found a poem writen by another patient for Rulon's birthday some years back.

A Tribute to Dr. Gibson On His Birthday
(By a very grateful patient)
Much on my mind,
Got far behind
In organization -
Affecting realization
Of important occasion-
Your Birthday!
What can I say?
That I still wish
Life's full dish
To a wonderful guy,
Helps others who cry:
No one can deny -
Deep understanding
Problems not withstanding.
Patience, compassion,
Love is in fashion.
Helping us Vets
Crawl out of nets
Of mental sets.
See the light,
A marvelous sight!
Twists and turns,
Souls often burn
With fear & frustration,
Having served a nation
In high and low station,
You clear our minds
And Sanity find --
Now vistas in life
Above the strife,
Unerring guidance,
Brilliant reliance
On Rational Science,
We crawl from our wall
To happiness from hell.
A 100-gun salute,
To our mentor astute.
we'll love you forever
Through all our endeavor,
we'll never say never.
Here's our inscription:
"You're the greatest, Dr. Gibson!"
(I agree!!!)

Birthday in the Baptistry

Well, my birthday is over. We went to dinner on Friday night and then to lunch on Saturday before heading to the temple. We were assigned as baptistry coordinators. We had a Singles group from Buffalo Grove come. One fellow had some family names and so there were a lot of Pakistani people baptised last night. There is always a good feeling there and we were glad to be able to help. There wasn't too much laundry to be done and when we were finished, we weren't needed anywhere else. So we got to come home and get the calls from our kids. That is the best gift for a mother!
I am thankful to be healthy and able to serve in the temple. What a wonderful way to spend #66!
