Hanoke Trip - Part 2 June '11

Hello Kitty and Black Egg Friend (see the yellow yolk peeking out the top) just waiting to have their pictures taken with you. Eating the hard boiled eggs that have cooked in the hot sulphur pools that bubble up in this area.

Just like Yellowstone!

Rulon and Brother Watabe in the mist.

Here we are - just like Brigadoon!

Don and Joy Rich - just returned as missionaries here to Japan after spending years here for work.

Eating the black eggs - shells everywhere!

5 eggs for 500 yen - about a dollar each!

Of course, we bought some! Brother Watabe loves eggs!

Well, maybe Rulon took one bite but it is a great picture!

It was a little climb to the sulphur pools but worth it.

Cute little girl posing by the big rock with the name Hakone on it.

This sign warns people not to stay too long as the fumes may cause damage. And if you have breathing problems, heart problems, etc. you probably shouldn't be here.

Water gauge ...

This area is known for the beautiful inlaid wood objects that are made here. I bought a little puzzle box and a cute little kokeshi doll toothpick holder.

She is everywhere! I take her picture every time too!

Explanation sign telling about the area.

These are the pirate ships that took us across the beautiful lake.

Fishermen out on the lake - we didn't see them pull anything in though.

This pirate went around to try to get you to have your picture taken with him - and then went around trying to sell you the picture!

I think they call this the Crow's Nest!

The Donahoes and the pirate!

Looking across the lake.

The Richs and Sister Watabe - ready to go home!

Pirate chest - where they stored items for the ship.

One more picture of the beautiful hydrangeas - I love these flowers!

Waiting for our train - can you see the little boy with a pirate hat saluting? It was so cute and his parents were snapping lots of pictures!

We had great weather and it only rained once we were on the train! What a great trip to another beautiful part of Japan!

June 24th'11

This is where a group of us went on Monday (hence I missed Skyping all of you). This is a place where they sell all sorts of chinaware and also souvenirs. We had quite an adventure getting there but it was worth it. What a fun place! This is the clerk who added up our purchases on an abacus! She was so fast with it and graciously allowed me to take her picture.

We were invited to a concert of the Tokyo Men's Chorus. One of the men in our District sings with them and gave us free tickets. They preformed with a very famous orchestra. Here we are waiting for the men to get the tickets.

Some people were dressed in kimono for the event.

This is the stage - it was in a beautiful hotel and the sound was excellent.

Looking back at the huge hall - before they told me not to take pictures!

This sign is on the Chinese Embassy - I thought it was very thoughtful.

Japan continues to struggle with the immensity of the disasters.

June 22nd ' 11 The Chois leave Japan

This was the week that Elder Choi and Sister Koo left Japan. (Women keep their maiden names in Korea.) He has been in the Asia North Area Presidency tor over 4 years and now is being reassigned to the Temple Committee in Salt Lake. We had a little reception of them on Wednesday. Here they are receiving a memory book with pictures and comments from many people in this area. Elder Stevenson is going to miss his "Peter"!

The cake!

The office staff just before they left on Friday. Elder Choi was taking the picture.

Here he is IN the picture!

Running the gauntlet - saying goodbye to everyone as they go out to the van to head to the airport.
The Richs and the Chois - the Richs are now back as missionaries!

Sweet little Sister Uneo - Sister Wada's mother and an office worker.

We will miss the Chois! What a tremendous asset they have been to this area. Elder Ringwood and family come in August to replace him in the Area Presidency.
