Not Again!

This morning, my plan was to wash the deck and get it ready to stain. I blew off all the leaves and dirt. I came in the kitchen for a second and noticed that the ceiling was starting get a wet spot. We have had this happen before and so I went up to check the toilet that is right above. There was a little water leaking out. I touched the hose to see if I could stop it - and it fell off! Water spurted everywhere. I ran downstairs to turn off the water. By the time I came back up, the damage was done.
Here is our new stainless steel connection from tank to the water supply - cost - $7.00. I had the plumber replace the connections on the other two toilets - now total is $21.00. He also replaced the float and flapper in the one and now it is up to $53.

Of course, an hour of his time is $150 minimum - so the total is $203. Believe me, I was glad to pay it as he was here within an hour. Luckily, we have been using Keveloh Plumbing for many years and they are good. Our boys grew up with a couple of theirs. Here is the bathtub where I threw all the towels and mats.
Naturally, water has to obey the law of gravity and so it leaked down through the kitchen ceiling. It also leaked in the family room through one of the beams. We will have to see if we have to replace drywall. Last time it happened, we were able to sand it down and repaint it. Let's just hope that is the case this time.Anyway, that has been my morning - now for a nap and then an afternoon cleanup session.

LESSON LEARNED - know where the water turn off is AND which way to turn it. (Clockwise or righty - tighty) Also, our plumber says to turn off the water when you are on vacation. It could have been so much worse if I hadn't been here. Oh, and check your toilets now and then and see if the tubing is cracked or loose or dripping. These stainless ones should be fine. And also, pray a lot!!

Mason's Husky Dog

Here is the Husky Dog costume for Mason - he wants to match his Build-a-Bear. I think this will be cute. It has a hood for the head that is attached. A red felt collar with shiny jewels (buttons) is around the neck. The body is gray and white. There is no tail because I thought it would just get in the way. Here is the costume minus the Cubs shirt.
And here it is with another Cubs outfit. Not sure that this will work as the shirt doesn't unbutton all the way and it might not fit over the head. But the shorts can be worn with the other shirt also.
After Halloween, the blue shirt is for Scottie and the red outfit is for Mason. Go Cubs!!
And that's the end of the costume parade for this year unless any other request come in (soon)!

More Grandkids - more costumes!

Here are some more costumes ready to send off to my darlings for Halloween. First is the Tinkerbell one for Natalia with wings, wand, socks, slippers, shorts and goodie bag. I also made a hair tie to go around her bun - not pictured. Won't she be a cute little "Tink"!

This is for Ty - He wants to be Jack Pumpkin from Return to Oz. I am unsure what to do for the head so you see two of my ideas. The first is a placemat and the second is a little candy carrier. Maybe Dustin can come up with some fantastic idea for his head.
And this is for Princess Tanna with a crown and some jewelry (probably filled with lead so don't let her eat it!) She will be a beautiful princess!
I didn't make the rest of these - Samantha wanted to be a cheerleader and I found this one complete with bow. I bought the pompons at the Dollar Store and doesn't it just look like her?
Braydon wanted to be the Dark Knight. I also bought this one as it would be impossible to come up with a mask and that makes the costume.
Scottie wants to be Indiana Jones and I probably could have made one but this one was so cool and I think he will like it. He loves adventure and will look great in this
As for Mason - you will be getting that picture later. I am still coming up with a Husky Dog costume! Last year he wanted to be a Barney Bus. (And I actually figured one out!) I did go buy some gray fur type fabric and have something in mind. He actually wants to match his Build - a- Bear that he made this summer. It has a Cubs shirt on and I found one of those so I think he will be very happy.
After that, I think I am finished unless the big boys decide on something. They will probably wear football uniforms or something really cool.
It isn't even October and the costumes are almost finished. I love to do them early so I can look for bargains and have the luxury of time to make them special. I hope that every Halloween the children will remember that their Grandma loves them. This tradition started with Holly and it has been fun to get the requests and fulfill dreams.

More Costumes/Gibson Girls

Here are this week's costumes. I had fun doing them! Remember to get your orders in so Grandma can keep busy!
Here is Little Bo Peep for Karli (with bonnet and ribbon for her crook - start looking for something she can use to "herd" her sheep)! Thie is the back view.
Here is Kayla's Gothic vampire outfit - with choker necklace and wig.
Here is Holly's Hip Witch with hat.
I am starting on a Princess outfit for Tanna next!

The Flood

Well, we got some of the water from the Great Flood of 2008. Chicago had a double whammy - a huge storm on Friday and Saturday and then the remnants of Hurricane Ike on Sunday. We came home from church to hear water gurgling in the basement and knew we were in trouble. It was coming from the basement drain. There was just no where else for the water to go. Everything was saturated.
After shoveling into the sump pump for a while, we knew we couldn't keep that up all night. We called our friend, Del Ashby. If it can be fixed, he can do it. He came over with some plumber's putty and stuffed it in the drain to seal it. It held the water back until we could get the plumber this morning. He installed a new float device - the other was broken. He checked the sump pump and pronounced it still viable. All this for a measley $150.
Anyway, here is the devastation - after we had sucked up the water with the shop vac!

Joyce Smith came over this morning and helped me bleach out the floor. It was so wonderful just to have someone care enough to do this dirty work with me!
This is what is going out to the trash tomorrow. Believe me, it was not easy getting the rugs out there! Rulon had cut them up but they were still heavy.
At least nothing very valuable was lost. We were lucky compared to a lot of people in both Illinois and Indiana.

Thank Goodness It Wasn't Snow

Here is the lake in our woods! It has rained almost steadily all day and part of last night. We have had 5 inches of rain and more is coming. Hurricane Ike's remnants will hit tomorrow and there could be a lot more rain. The rivers are nearly at flood stage now. It will be a real mess if it keeps coming! Can you see the lake in the background?
But it makes everything lush and green!
Here is the store where I went to get a few groceries today. The parking lot was not designed to drain well and it always is like this when it rains.
Dad and I drove around a little this afternoon and saw lots of retention ponds that were filling up. The ducks love this kind of weather! We feel so sorry for those people along the gulf coast who have lost so much. Our little rain is nothing compared to what they have experienced.

All Cut From the Same Cloth

A couple of years ago, I learned how to make a stack and slash quilt. Here is the fabric that I used. To make the squares, you stack the fabric in a certain way and then cut it (slash with rotary cutter). Then you take four pieces that are the same and put the matching corners together to form a square. By varying the way you put the pieces together, you end up with all sorts of different squares.
See some of the squares that I made below.

By putting the squares together with borders (sashing), you get a beautiful quilt with all different squares as blocks.I had the quilt top in the closet for a year or so and finally had a lady machine quilt it into this bedspread. I then made the pillow shams to match.
Then I made pillows and a bench cushion. The doll is one Jill made called "Happiness".

Of course, the pink lamp had to go - here is my $5 bargain lamp from Goodwill - I also replaced the pink clock with a nicer one (also from Goodwill). So now the bedroom has a completely different look! Why am I blogging about this? Well, I have been thinking that out of just one piece of fabric, so many different squares were created. It is just like our family - you are all different but were "cut from the same cloth"! Each one of you is unique and has a special place in our family quilt. It has been stitched together with love and experiences into something that is beautiful. Thank you all for being part of Dad and me!

A Good Day at the Temple

Well, we asked Del Ashby to take a picture of us in front of the temple and didn't realize that the camera was on the video mode. So here is the result! We went up to work yesterday afternoon for our stake staffing day. The stakes take turns providing workers for the temple on Saturday afternoons. Dad got to be the officiator for the session for our ward and I was the follower with him. It was a rare opportunity and we were glad to work together. It was a wonderful day. So many blessings have been given to us as a result of temple work. I am realizing this more and more. We love our family and are so glad that we are sealed together.

Costumes, Anyone?

Here are the pirate costumes for Krissy, Sloane and Holden. They turned out great, if I say so myself. I already made Emily a Dorothy dress while they were here. Anyone else have an order? Let me know so I can get working on them. For Krissy
For Sloane - with booty bag & Dollar Store accessories
For Holden - Can't wait to see pictures of them dressed up all ready for Halloween!

All Balled Up

Here are the balls that Kim and kids helped to make. I sewed them up and had them stuff them for me. They are made of scraps of fleece and stuffed with the scraps that are too small to use for anything else. They are sent to the Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake City to be distributed to those children who have no toys. Can you imagine being delighted to get such an object? Most children I know would be sadly disappointed if this was their only gift. But we hear great responses from those who receive these balls. They are thrilled to have something that is their own and is a luxury - not a necessity. So, thanks Kim, Emily and Ella for making some children's lives brighter! It is nice to share with others.
