The Persian Pickle Club

The title of this blog comes from the Sandra Dallas book The Persian Pickle Club which we read for our book club this month. This is the story of a group of Kansas farm women during the depression. They get together each week to quilt. The name comes from a type of fabric - paisley - that they have incorporated into mamy of their quilts. The Pickles are of all ages and are very loyal to each other. Throughout the book, many problems are solved by working together. There is even a murder mystery involved!

Our group also has women of all ages and personalities just like in the book. Throughout the years, we have also encountered many problems and been a great help to each other. We have developed a strong bond just like the Kansas depression era women had. I was reviewing the book and thought it would be fun if we made our own persian pickle quilt. We all helped tie it and also each of us signed a square. (In the book, the women are making a "celebrity" quilt with autographs of famous people for charity. It is auctioned off to the highest bidder.) We just drew names for it. Judy P. was the winner. This is very fitting as she is a longtime member and suffered a stroke at our last meeting. In just one month, she has recovered enough resume driving (and quilting). Her progress is just remarkable. Here we are showing off our quilt.
Women in all ages have come together and been a strength to each other. I am thankful to have had so many wonderful friends throughout my life. Here's to all my Pickles!

Lake Setauket

Here is our lake this morning. Last night we had torrential rain for about three hours. The grate in front of our house got clogged. Neighbors came and lifted it off so that the water could go into the sewer. Naper Blvd. and Iroquois and other streets were closed because of high water. We did not flood for which we are very thankful. When it rains here, it POURS!

The Rest of the Story ...

The last ten days of my trip to Utah were spent helping Lynn recover from gall bladder surgery. She has suffered for years with stomach problems and finally a test showed the problem! Poor thing! She had four small incisions in her stomach and it took a while for her to heal. I was glad to be able to come and help with the children (and Dustin - just kidding!). We accomplished a lot in those days and I can't even believe that I didn't take many pictures. But Lynn took a lot and so I hope that you will look at her blog. The children were so good and we had a great time together. I hope they will remember Grandma better now (the good times at least). Karyssa gets her brown eyes from her mommy and Grandma!Beautiful little Samanta - what a wonderful helper she was to me!
I stayed at Jill's the night before returning home. Here I am with Mason as I get ready to go to the airport.
What an incredible smile this boy has!
My Scottie is growing up!
He is such a delight.
Tanna and Grandma - February 14, 2009
Cute little Valentine girl!
And I couldn't resist putting this one on - the Asp girls were always dressing up. These are their flapper outfits!
I notice that I don't have any pictures of Natalia! I did get to see her and tend her a couple of times and she is adorable. But Lynn got a lot of cute ones when she was visiting.
And finally, look what was waiting for me at home - Rulon missed me! And I missed him.

Samantha's Baptism

Samantha Beverly Johnson was baptised and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on January 31, 2009. This was her actual birthday! Here she is near a display at the luncheon afterwards. The heart on the "comforter" says her name and then January 31st - Born 2001 - Baptised 2009.

Here is her beautiful white dress for the occasion. Her new scriptures are on the table in the cute case. She is standing near the portrait of her and her daddy when she was a baby. Now, eight years later, Dustin was able to baptize and confirm her. Eating some of the delicious food at the luncheon.
Natalia wants to be just like her cousin.
Tanna and Mason enjoying the occasion.
What a cute smile!
Dave and Jill - look at that great food, too!
Paige and Mark - Mark's family was not able to come but we enjoyed having him surprise Samantha.
Ella, Kim and Steve - one week after having a baby!
Dusin and Braydon - hugging or wrestling? Samantha and Sandra (piano teacher and honorary aunt)!
How wonderful that I was able to be there for this wonderful time in Samantha's life! She is very dear to us. She is our 8th grandchild to become a member of the church. We hope she will always cherish this blessing and remember what she has promised.

Eden's Arrival

It has been nearly a month since little Eden Kim Asp was born. She came into the world on Jan. 24, 2009. I arrived on Jan. 25th. Here is Lynn's family at the hospital. They brought Emily and Ella back from their "sleepover". Jill also helped tend them while Mom and Dad were busy at the hospital.

This is our 20th grandchild. Isn't she darling?

Eden is ready to go home - Monday, Jan. 26th.

Grandma bathes Eden - she doesn't like it very much.

Ella watches the whole process. I gave Emily and Ella their first baths also!

I feel very blessed to have been able to be a part of this wonderful time. I was able to stay with the Asps for 10 days. Then I went on to Lynn's house - more on that on another post!

What a Week!

Last Sunday, I left Naperville at 4:45 A.M. for a flight to SLC. It was bitterly cold at that time of morning. We were on a small plane and actually had to board by going outside and up the stairs. I thought this was unusual until we landed and had to deplane the same way (just like in the old movies). Steve picked me up and we went straight to the hospital to see Kim and new baby Eden. She is adorable and I was so glad to see both my babies - doesn't seem that long since I held newborn Kim. Jill had been helping with Emily and Ella and had taken them to meet up with Lynn for a sleepover. Lynn and family brought the girls to the hospital and I cared for them until Kim and Eden came home on Monday. The girls are so excited to finally have their sister at home. Monday, I also helped tend Tanna and Mason while Jill and Dave took Scottie to a specialist in SL. (He is short for his age but looks like everything is fine). I returned to Am. Fork in time to put the girls to bed.
Wed. we had to take the baby into the hospital for a check for jaundice levels. That is quite the ordeal - getting all the girls safely buckled in to those car seats! Then we had to go on Thurs. also. But this time, things were fine. We also ended up taking the baby into the doctor to check on her as she wasn't having wet or dirty diapers. Well, we laid her on the examining table, took off the diaper and whoosh! Out is all came - so she is normal!
I took the girls to storytime at the library and have taken Emily to and from the bus stop each day (afternoon Kindergarten). We had some nice meals brought in for three days. On Friday, I made cinnamon rolls and we took them and some black balloons (4o on Sat.) over to Steve's work and for him to show off the baby.
Saturday, I took the girls early to Spanish Fork for Samantha's baptism (and actual birthday). It was a wonderful day and Kim, Steve and Eden came just in time to see her baptized. Jill, Dave, Scottie, Mason and Tanna were there along with Paige, Dan and Natalia. Mark surprised us by driving from Green River to be there. He left the family home as it was so much driving in one day. We had a wonderful luncheon with the Johnson side of the family after. Samantha got a lot of wonderful gifts and was as pretty as a picture in her new white dress. What a sweet, beautiful girl!
Then we came back and had cake and ice cream for Steve. Mark was here for a little while before heading back. We ordered Papa John's for dinner with extra for the Super Bowl. We also watched Passage to Zarahemla that I brought to pass around to the girls here.
Now it is early Sunday morning - I still get up too early here. We are going to take the girls to church this afternoon while Kim stays home with Eden. Then Steve wants to watch the Super Bowl.
All in all, it has been very eventful for me this week. I will stay here until Wed. evening and then head to Spanish Fork. Lynn will have her gall bladder removed on Tues. and I will help when Dustin returns to work. I still haven't changed my ticket but maybe I will try to get back to my sweetheart by Valentine's Day. He is great about having me come but gets lonesome! (So do I - for him)!
I am anxious to visit my parents in Payson next week. Marilyn came over to see the baby (and me) with gifts for the girls and a movie ticket for Kim & Steve! Don't know if I will get to see any of the rest of my siblings, but if you are out there reading this, know that I love you.
I just heard a baby cry - she is actually very good and I didn't hear her at all last night. But I am in the basement and they are taking care of the nights so I don't know how things went. I am so glad to be able to be here - being a grandma is great!
