Obon Festivals Plus August '11

Rulon admires an old VW bus. Reminded him of his mission days when they had a bus display that they took around to various parts of the city. Elder Kikuchi has been parking his car next to our apartment for a few weeks while he is here in Japan.

Then there was this one that I saw! Looks like a toy car, Natalia!

We went to the Ebisu Obon Festival again this year. This is an amazing display of dancing by young and old and lots of food.

Blurry - but you can see the kids up on the platform dancing.

Even babies are dressed up and enjoy the action!

Such fun to dress up in yukatas and be with friends.

And the food vendors were busy!

Rulon tries squid on a stick!

He gets Sister Rothery to try it.

And then Elder Rich!

For Family Home Evening, we had our own Obon Festival - Here is my new yukata with the dragonflies on it.

Elder Donahoe gets into the spirit of it all.

Live fish in bowls were the centerpieces!

Here is a hanging of 1000 folded paper cranes that was made by the Grames' daughter and friends. It will be sent to hang in the school we visited up in the Tohoku area.

The Watabes did a fantastic job of decorating and providing entertainment for the evening.

There was a lot of good food as usual.

Sister Susuki tells of how the Japanese people get ready for summer. It is more involved than anything we ever do!
Learning a folk dance - Elder Stevenson got into the action even though he had just returned from the States a couple of hours before.

Sister Fillmore and me.

Singing a folksong - these are the Japanese temple workers.

Trying to sing along.

Elder Donahoe sings a crazy American folk song in his southern drawl.

Some more of the beautiful decorations.

Summertime in Japan - hot, humid, and full of festivals!

Bugs and More August '11

This is what our entryway looks like many times. Shoes OFF! This will become a tradition in our home.

We love seeing thing like this as we go around. Japanese know how to celebrate!

The wedding center across the street - this time decorated with balloons!

Anyone interested in this?

We took a visit to the National Museum of Nature and Science. I think the kids will like looking at these pictures.

This is a giant squid!

And you can skim through these - I took them for Dan!

Loved this sign!

There was a hands-on section for kids (of all ages)!

This is a group that was playing instruments at the open air market. It was blazing hot but they were entertaining us all.

And some jugglers.

This poor homeless man was asleep on the walkway as we went along.

While the men went to a Priesthood meeting, we sisters had our own meal together at our apartment.

Then I made them tie two quilts while we visited!
