A Day With the Aoyagis Part 1

We (the Gibsons and the Watabes) were invited to go to Elder and Sister Aoyagi's home to be dressed in their family kimonos, have lunch and participate in a tea ceremony. Elder Aoyagi is the 2nd counselor in the Asia North Area presidency. We have enjoyed many other experiences with this wonderful couple and felt it an honor to be invited to their home.

Sister Aoyagi and her friend dressing me in this heirloom kimono that Sister Aoyagi's mother made for her granddaughters' coming of age.

Getting the obi tied just right!

It took two to get each of us dressed!

Now it is Rulon's turn - Sister A. holds up the under kimono.

Putting on the tabi shoes ...

Rulon in the "underwear"...

Now the outer kimono ...

Tying the obi ...

Now come the "pants" ...

Now the over jacket and he is dressed!

All dress up and ready for pictures in the "tea" room!

Note the position of my hands and feet - it was hard to hold my toes together like that.

Here is my obi which is tied in a "puffy sparrow" type bow.

OK, here comes the macho side of Rulon!

Now with the sword ...

His dream come true!

The long sleeves are worn by an unmarried girl and then when she is married, she wears the shorter sleeves.

I loved the long sleeves - plenty of room for a fan, etc.

Now it is Sister Watabe's turn.

This is an instruction book on how to tie different kinds of bows in the obi.

And finished!

The Aoyagis snap some pictures.

The four of us - another great experience together!

This obi was tied in a "double drum" bow.

Placing the toy sword in the obi ...

Elder Watabe dressed to the hilt!

Now with two swords!

Two warriors!

And their wives!

These are nearly all alike but I can't choose which is best so I am including them all!

I felt like a Japanese princess for a day!

Thanks to the Aoyagis for this wonderful cultural experience!
