Change

Today we walked into sacrament meeting and immediately sensed that something special was going to happen. The whole stake presidency was there along with several other stake people. We glanced at the program and saw that all the speakers were "to be announced". Tim Rodriguez, the counselor in the bishopric, took charge until after the sacrament. Then President Peterson took over and released several stake people and the ward bishopric! Our new bishop is Mark Quinn. The counselors are Andrew Child (he was serving in the old bishopric) and Mike Lyons who is fairly new to the ward.
Dad served in the bishopric with Mark Quinn under Bruce Duffield a few years ago and we have always thought that he would make a great bishop. The timing is right now. He has been the scoutmaster for a few years since they moved back to Naperville.
They had the released members speak including Sister Black. Then they had Bro. Lyons speak along with Mark's mother and his wife. Then the new Bishop Quinn spoke. It was a wonderful meeting and we fully support this new group.
Dan Black was called to the high council. Ken Fisher was released from that and I heard that he is the new bishop in the 6th Ward! He will be great. Dad said he saw his father in the building.
Change in the church occurs so smoothly - it is really a miracle how the process is set up so that within just a few minutes, the changes are made and the organization is complete again. Five years - it can seem like a short time or a very long time depending on life's circumstances. Guess this will be our last bishop in the Naperville 1st Ward! We have known most of them since moving here 36 years ago. Each one has been great for the time of his service. Thanks to all of them!

You Say Cicada, I Say Ci-cah-da

Incessant buzzing, skeletons hanging from trees, and a live one in my hair last night! I had just finished mowing the lawn (think jungle after having the mower in the shop for three weeks) and was sewing some Build A Bear pj's for Emily and Ella. I felt something moving in my hair and when I reached up to see what it was, I had a fat, green cicada in my hands! Yikes! Luckily, I kept my cool and showed it to the girls. They thought it was gross, of course.
When Dave and family were here, he found one just emerging from it's skin and showed the boys. They thought it was great. They also collected some of the shed skins and kept them in a bottle. The difference between boys and girls is huge!
Last year was the year of the 17 year cicadas. They come up from the ground and fill the world. People were buying netting to protect young trees. Show shovels were used to scoop them up and dispose of them. Luckily, we didn't have quite the problems with them here. It was in the older areas that more problems occurred. I read that some enterprising teens were collecting the shells, shellacking them and making jewelry from them!
Cicadas are just a part of summer here. When they fall silent, we know that fall is here.

Are We There Yet? (No, but we are working on it!)

Thought I would post the outline of the lesson I am going to give in Relief Society today. I have learned so much.

Establishing the Cause of Zion
RS Lesson August 10, 2008
We have just witnessed the opening ceremonies of the 29th Olympiad of modern times. Wasn’t it thrilling to see people from all over the world coming together in one place filled with goodwill and hope? Years of planning went into planning for this event. People worked together for the common good and did an outstanding job. Watching the parade of nations with people from over 200 countries in costume was inspiring. This is a big world and we are all so different but are all children of Heavenly Father. The coming together for such an event shows hope and promise that eventually we will all live and work together in peace.
Today we are going to be discussing something that will bring the peoples of the earth together to live in peace and harmony for much longer than the two week period of the Olympics. The cause of Zion has been discussed in every age.
We need to discuss the meaning of the word Zion. It is a place - it literally means a "sunny place" or "sunny mountain". It first designated a place in Palestine on which Jerusalem is built. In the Doctrine and Covenants, Zion has three designations: first, the land of America (both North and South), second, a specific place of gathering, and third, the pure in heart.
On June 7, 1831, Joseph Smith received a revelation that turned Chrurch members’ thoughts toward Zion. They had just been gathered in Kirtland for a conference. How would it be to hear these words from a prophet? "The next conference … shall be held in Missouri, upon the land which I will consecrate unto my people" (D&C 53:2). I think it would be much more wonderful than hearing that the 2016 Olympics would be held in Chicago!
Read from manual about Missouri – highlighted about Joseph’s vision and the trials of Missouri.
We know that the Saints left Missouri and went on to establish Nauvoo which they also had to leave. Can you even imagine the sorrow after the martyrdom as they left for yet another gathering place in the west? Thank goodness they received revelations from God regarding what they were to do. They must have had firm testimonies that eventually Zion would be built in the center place but until then, they could establish themselves and work for the cause of Zion in other places.
As they reached the Salt Lake Valley, they began to know even more that Zion was to be expanded and stakes were to be built up so that eventually the center place could set up.
Here is a book telling of the Saints who were sent to establish Zion in Southern Nevada. Rulon’s great grandparents were sent by Brigham Young to this desolate area. One stake was finally established which took in parts of Arizona also. Now there are hundreds of stakes there. This summer, we had a reunion with the descendants of his grandfather and reviewed much of the history of this area. Robert Orson Gibson was the patriarch in Las Vegas and had been asked to give a dedicatory prayer on the new welfare farm. There had been contention regarding the amount of money that had been spent in this effort. As he prayed to be able to unite the people and smooth feelings, he had a revelation concerning the Las Vegas area. He said that he could see thousands of homes in the desert and LDS chapels everywhere. He saw the temple that would be built there. As he told the people of his vision, they were united in working to make this come about. We stood near the temple and looked over at a chapel across from it and over the valley and knew that Zion had been built up in this area. This very thing has happened all over the world with stakes being established and temples dotting the earth.
Here are some statements from Joseph Smith that will give us a better understand of the importance of stakes and Zion.
Any place where the Saints gather is Zion, which every righteous man will build up for a place of safety for his children. There will be here and there a Stake of Zion for the gathering of the Saints … There your children shall be blessed, and you in the midst of friends where you may be blessed. The Gospel net gathers of every kind. We ought to have the building up of Zion as our greatest object … The time is soon coming when no man will have any peace but in Zion and her stakes.
Bette Haskin – tell about living where there was no stake or organized church.
Even though we are still waiting "a little season" for Zion to be built up as a city in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri there is much we can do to establish Zion in our hearts (or purify ourselves). Zion means the pure in heart.
We as Daughters of Zion have a great responsibility.
Dianne Rodriguez – tell us how we can be strengthened by our stake and what we can do to help build up Zion in our homes and area.
Keith B. McMullin said, "We journey together toward Zion like the early pioneers when we receive the covenants and ordinances of the gospel. We, too, "Come to Zion, come to Zion, ere his floods of anger flow". In the scriptures we read, "Therefore, verily, thus saith the Lord, let Zion rejoice, for this is Zion – the pure in heart." The establishment of Zion should be the aim of every member of this Church."
Are we walking towards Zion in our day? Are we purifying ourselves and leading our families? I believe that we are and I see many Zion people among us. May we all work together as did the early Saints and someday, the center place of Zion will be erected and Christ will establish Zion on the earth.
Bear Testimony
Bette will now sing one of the many hymns with Zion as the subject.

Meet Baby Blue!

Here is our new car! Dad picked it out last night and Kim & girls & I picked it up this morning. It is a 2009 Toyota. We have loved our other two Toyotas and this looks like it will be a great one too.

Kim & Steve need a newer car and so he arranged to fly back here while he isn't working and drive it back this week. He has spent all day trying to get here - the plane was delayed and he missed his connection to Phoenix. He will be tired when he finally comes via taxi.

We are enjoying our visit with Kim and girls. She is doing pretty well but has a harder time at night. It is now very hot and humid. Jill & Dave lucked out with good weather. We just heard from them that they are home safely.
