Shanks Children Visit Grandma!

NEWS RELEASE _ BTG PRESS

David Scott Shanks II, Mason Gene Shanks, and Tanna Lee Shanks have spent the past two and a half weeks on a cross country trip with their parents, David Scott Shanks and the former Jill Gibson. They left Lehi, Utah on July 14 and visited Green River, WY, Winter Quarters, IO, Nauvoo and Carthage, IL before arriving at their final destination of Naperville, IL to visit their grandparents, Rulon and Barbara Gibson of this city. While visiting in Naperville, they were able to see such sights as the Riverwalk with the paddleboats, Portillo's Hot Dogs, Build-A-Bear Workshop, the carousel at Fox Valley Mall, Connie's and Geodono's Pizza, Brookfield Zoo, Navy Pier and the Sears Tower. The favorite place was probably the DuPage County Children's Museum which they visited five different times. The Gibsons' back yard provided hours of fun with sprinklers, fireflies, treasure hunts through the woods, building a pirate boat on the deck (and swabbing it!). Ice cream cones, popcicles, fluffernutter sandwiches and grilled cheese were favorites during this time.

Other favorite activities included the tickle bug, playing with the purple monster, the doll house, Grandpa's pretend gun, playing camp in the basement, reading stories, making cinnamon rolls and bread and best of all, bathing in the giant bathtub. (See picture below)

Today, July 30, the Shanks children will return with their parents to their home. They plan on stopping a couple of nights for much needed rest. They leave with many memories of a wonderful vacation. We wish them well on their journey home (their parents, that is)!

The Case of the Broken Camera

Jill and Dave and children are visiting. I had taken some pictures with our digital camera (just a drop in the bucket compared to the number Jill was taking)! Somehow I dropped the camera and - it wouldn't open any more. I changed batteries, shook it, etc. but nothing. Dad and Dave looked at it and decided it was broken. We went for a couple of days without it. Then on Sat., Dad did some computer research for a new one. He went up to KMart to look at the ones he liked and came home with a new one!!! We got it all set up and took some more pictures with it.
Dave had mentioned that he could hear the batteries rattling around in the old one. Dad took it in his den, pulled up the battery post and IT WORKS AGAIN!! So now we have two digital cameras. Of course, our old one has a tiny screen and is quite large (probably looks like a dinosaur). I guess we will keep the new one. Here is what we got.

We've Been Tannalized!

I took this before the arrival of Miss Tanna Lee. I knew that this would be too tempting for a two year old.

Here we are after she had picked some pretty flowers and dug up some of the dirt. I actually turned the pot around to preserve the two remaining flowers. But it has been worth it all to have her here. Actually, she has done pretty well. She is just a curious, typical little toddler (and so incredibly cute)!!

Can you guess the theme(s)?

Well, I noticed that I definitely have two themes going on in our house this summer. In real life, I don't like roosters or chickens. But I love replicas of them! I guess this is my new thing - I have had owls, cows, ducks, and pigs in the past. Chickens/roosters seem to be very popular right now as I see them everywhere. Lucky for me, some people have moved on to other things in their decor because I have found most of these at garage sales or Gooodwill.
This cocky cock was given to me by Mark & Kellie from their trip to the Bahamas.
I remember Aunt Leah had a glass chicken with a removable lid. This basket reminds me of that.
Here is my rooster table runner - with the arrangement I made myself! These two remind me of Guatemala although I got them here. Here is my rooster cookie jar.And it is filled for the Shanks kids!
I even have plates with the chicken (and fruit) theme. Now I do love sunflowers and so they dominate part of the kitchen during the summer. I know that they grow as weeds out west but here you see them in the flower shops at quite a price. This shelf shows off some of my collection on the runner that Joyce Smith made for me. The one in the corner sings "You are My Sunshine" and the kids love it. So do I the first few times - then I am looking for the off button.
This one was bought years ago, but it still delights me every summer when I put it out. This is the wreath on the front door.
Sunflowers spill over into the family room to bring some sunshine there.
The guest bathroom also sports sunflowers.

Here is another one to brighten the cabinet.
So there you have it - a view of some fun things that I enjoy. I am thinking I will need to "Tannaproof" things as soon as that little sweetheart arrives (probably tomorrow night).
