Is it any wonder that I am proud of him??? Here we go into another phase of our lives. May it be as wonderful as the past has been.

Here are some of the things that he brought home.
And this is from his last patient! It is a plaque that reads:
Dr. Rulon Gibson
"Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum."
We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.

Thanks Doc for being my co-pilot on my flight from the rice paddies to the present day.

Rulon Gibson, PhD
Throughout his forty years of VA Service, Dr. Rulon Gibson has been a quiet force for excellence in treatment, education, and leadership. He pioneered cognitive approaches to psychotherapy and the application of hypnosis in health psychology. Known by all as a devoted teacher, students year after year requested Dr. Gibson as a clinical supervisor. Other students learned from his cogent lectures; still others benefitted from his years of active service on the Psychology Training Committee. To his colleagues, Dr. Gibson was a consistent voice of reason and reconciliation. The trust that he earned is perhaps best represented by his service as the first Chair of the Psychology Professional Standard Board. Always hovering during these myriad endeavors was a sense of humor, both gentle and knowing.
In his clinical work, Dr. Gibson often challenged patients to recognize the inevitable human condition of fallibility. As patients, students and colleagues continue to carry the teachings he generously shared, they will forever be challenged to locate that grain of fallibility in Dr. Rulon Gibson, whom they today honor as the "clinician's clinician."
Is it any wonder that I am proud of him??? Here we go into another phase of our lives. May it be as wonderful as the past has been.

WOW! Mom, you did such a great job photo blogging this for us. I am SO PROUD of my dad today! It was so much fun to see the pictures of all the people I remember throughout my childhood hearing about (and I remember the nice secretaries helping me when I was in 8th grade on "bring your daughter to work day")!
I am so glad they gave Dad the recognition he so deserved. He has truly made an impact on thousands of lives there. I'm sure it was very bittersweet for him. I teared up at that poem by the veteran who made the plaque- very inspiring. I can't believe the day is finally here!
Congratulations, Dad, and I am so happy you'll be closer to all of us kids in this next stage of life. It might even be crazier than what you worked with before! Anyway, thanks for sharing this and I thought about you on Wednesday for your big day!
Congratulations Uncle Rulon! We are very proud of you too.
Congrats, Dad! I was so proud today, that I had to write something on my blog, too! We love you and can't wait for you and Mom to get out here.
That's my Dad!! We're very proud of you today. I've been thinking about you all week and talking to my co-workers about your retirement.
Now it's time to go golfing every morning, right?
Congratulations to my second father! :) We'll be glad to see you out here hopefully soon!
Congratulations on your retirement. Enjoy each day together, continue to build more memories, visit family, and share your friendship and love with others. Barb, besure you have enough "Honey do lists", so that Rulon will have a reason to get up in the morning. Love ya, your friend from yesteryear. Virginia Chalk
My goodness! Rulon has retired, but wait wasn't it only 2 weeks ago that we were all dating at BYU and YOUNG,no gray hair or wrinkles!
Times flies when we are having fun! Congratulations to you both!

Congratulations Dad! I can actually remember (just barely) when you started at the VA so it's amazing that you're now retiring. I'm proud of you Dad!
Congratulations Brother Gibson! What a legacy you left and what a beautifully written Certificate of Recognition you received.
Thanks for sharing. What a great guy!
Rulon, I am not surprised that you are well-beloved by many beyond the confines of our little Naperville Stake. Congratulations on your many years of service!
