Nikko Trip Part 4

Nippon is the name for Japan. From our hotel window!
Beautiful!!!
A young couple and a great view! Do you see the high heeled boots?
So many buses with people coming for a look at this beautiful land.

Love the outfits??
Dad and all the grandeur.
Sister Grames and the Watabes at the entrance to the park where the huge waterfall was.
Isn't she darling?
Buying yet another entrance ticket.
For all the Hello Kitty fans!
The huge waterfall that we saw.
More boots and shorts!
Lots of fun gift shops and places to eat here.
One of me ...
And us!
The Grames
Wise Monkey inspired everything!!
Persimmon candy that we bought for those back in the office.
Fun decor outside an eating shop.
Santa is here! This was a music box shop.
Elder Grames eating his trout - head and all!
We went from squatty potties to super deluxe toilets (in the hotel). Here is a fun sign we saw in one restroom.
Here is the Automatic Hand Disinfection Machine!
Yum! Cricket snacks!
These trees have lost their leaves but they are beautiful anyway.
This is called Dragonhead.
Here are the steps we went down to get to see the Dragonhead. Notice how they have preserved that one tree in the middle of the steps! Nature is revered and if it is alive, it gets protected!

Nikko Trip Part 3

This is a carving of elephants done by someone who had never seen one! Everywhere you saw images of The Three Wise Monkeys - also lots of souvenirs were for sale with them on it - I only bought two!
Looking up toward the shrine.
Look at the ornate carving!
Amazing carvings and statues!
This is just ONE of many carvings of groups of people around the top of a shrine.
Doggies in their coats -it was chilly!
This is the famous resting cat - lots of souvenirs with this on them too!
Stairs, stairs, stairs!
Elder Grames getting a dip of water from a natural spring.
And Sister Watabe does the same.
I bet the person in the wheelchair never made it up to the shrines!
Shorts and boots - the fad here.
Huge bell.
Love the moss!
Taking off our shoes for each shrine was just part of the routine!
Just look at the carving - what a lot of years must have gone into building such buildings!
Had to get a picture of the red jacket and red shoes!
Here is a group getting a picture taken in front of a shrine.
I snapped one of them also!
Lots of school groups were visiting -yellow caps everywhere!
Look at the leaves through the tori gate!
Workers repairing the roof.
Horse ready to take riders around - he is showing us that he can stand on three legs!
Here's our fun group!
Couldn't resist snapping this couple!
Rulon standing standing by the wreath of good fortune.
Huge drum in shrine.
One type of tree growing out of another!
Another shrine.

Nikko Trip Part 2

Nikko is the place where "The Three Wise Monkeys" originated from the reliefs that are along the top of one of the buildings. Remember Grandma's little monkeys that represented "Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil and See No Evil"? Here is the original!! All around the building were reliefs of the life cycle of a monkey. I took pictures of the explanations. I got most of the English translations but missed a couple but you will get the idea. Just enlarge each picture to read the words.

I think in this one, he is old and about ready to die.
Of course, Dad made up a metaphor and likened the life cycle of a monkey to our life cycles! Lots of life lessons here!
