March 6th '11 Doll Museum

On Saturday, a group of us went to Yokohama. First, we visited the largest doll museum in the world (so they said). Since it had been Girls' Day on March 3rd, they were having a special admission price!
Sister Watabe, Sister Fillmore and Me - in heaven!

Yokohama was where Admiral Perry landed and opened Japan up for trade with the world. Here is a model of that event.
Now for some of the dolls!

Love these parents with all the babies in a row and two in a basket!
There is a Japanese song about a girl with red shoes being taken onto a ship. A little child is singing and wondering about her. Part of the lyrics are "I wonder if her eyes have turned blue yet".
Dolls are beloved in every culture.

Contrast between European and Asian dress
And here is Samantha - the American Girl doll - way over here in Japan!

Wooden kokeshi dolls
Circus dolls
Italian dolls
German dolls
Korean dolls
Dolls of the Islands - see the one with a seashell skirt!
Indian dolls
Cute little baby (live doll)!
African dolls
I think this was Lapand or some other country like that.
Papoose - life size
Japanese dolls

Elder Fillmore and Elder Grames - pretending to be interested! Dad skipped the first part of the trip because of phone calls he had to make. He and Elder Watabe joined us later at China Town. This is the display for the United States - I was disappointed.
Egyptian dolls
Sister Fillmore and Sister Watabe looking at a display.
America and ...
Asia!
Grass skirt doll
Here is someone who apparently got dragged to the museum by his wife and daughters!
Beautiful display of cherry blossoms
As you went up the stairs, there were pictures from each decade. I enjoyed this one of the decade of my birth.
Little girl by the Raggedy Ann and Andy cutouts
Peeking through!
There was a whole gift shop with Raggedy Ann and Andy items for sale. These reminded me of Holly - she loved them so much.

Don't you love my mission! I do!

That place is right up your alley! I like all the different cultures they portray. My favorite picture though is of the guy asleep. :)

How fun! I'm so glad you had such a wonderful time doing something you love! These pictures are amazing. I agree that they should have had more dolls for the USA display. The little Japanese girls were so cute too. And I think after raising six kids and lots of grandkids, you deserve a mission like this!
