Costco Run in Japan
Today we took a trip to Costco! There were three couples who went. Here is Sister Robertson as she writes down the directions as her husband drives. They are leaving in June and Brother Watabe will have to drive. The Robertsons have lived in Japan for many years. He was a young missionary here, then worked here for IBM. They had their family of seven children with them. Then he was a mission president for 3 years. Now they are finishing up 3 years as public affairs missionaries.
Here I am! Costco is huge! You park on top and then go down moving ramp to the store. People who were going back to their cars were on the ramps that went up with their carts. The ramps are like escalators but don't have steps. The carts don't roll down! I don't know how it is done but it is amazing.
When we finished, we went to get lunch at the cafeteria. People were just leaving their carts unattended and no one bothered them. People are very honest and trusting - there are serious penalties for crime.
After all that, when we returned, we still didn't have some of the basics. We went to the neighborhood store for milk, etc. Here is Dad bagging the groceries! Bet you never thought you would see this!
This was outside the store - the recycling/garbage program is really involved. You have to separate things into many different categories. You can spend a lot of time sorting trash!
Here is Dad outside the store ready to go home. We just had to gasp at the prices - real sticker shock! We paid 239,000 yen at Costco - about 239 dollars. Brother Robertson said you just have to realize that you are going to be paying a lot and don't think about what you would spend in the states. I guess sometime I will be able to tell if something is a good deal but not yet! No coupons, Kim!
Dad has had a couple of conversations with missionaries and is getting into his work. I had fun decorating the bookshelves. I found all sorts of beautiful dishes and Japanese items in a storage cupboard. Everything loos so nice and we are settling into a routine. It is going to be a wonderful experience.

SO fun to see of your adventures! Thank you for sharing them!
What an adventure! Sounds like a really neat place. Glad you're enjoying it so far. By the way, it's nothing for Kellie to spend $400+ at Wal-Mart -- of course that's for 6 people. Then we have our weekly Smith's trips. Uggh!
Costco sounds fun. And the recycling program reminds me of Germany. Maybe someday the USA will catch up.
Costco! Who would have thought. That's neat that everyone can just leave their carts around without worrying that someone will take something. Can't wait to see tomorrow's adventures.
