Entering the gate to the huge temple.
Artist sketching the pagoda.
The Todaji Temple - built originally in the Nara period (710-794 A.C). This one has been rebuilt and is much smaller than the original (by about 1/3). It is one of the largest wooden structures in the world.
What a crowd!
Three huge Buddha statues were the main features in this temple. HUGE and very impressive.

The warrior statues guarding the palace.

I tried to get a picture of the leader with her flag - trying to keep track of her school group. The kids were surprisingly well behaved. No horsing around -just follow the leader!
One of the many statues in the park.
Another school group and their leader. The uniform are all so neat and the kids just look so cute in them. As we were resting at one point, some little school girls giggled and tried to speak English to us. Lots of the kids then started to call out "Hello"! We were an oddity down there.
Another funny sign!

Nara
As we came out of the train station, we saw this fountain. Note the picture of the anniversary symbol on the poster behind. This little guy was everywhere! (a type of baby with a big head and antlers and a toga- wierd).
At the entrance to the park - I loved the billboards.
How old do you think this tree is? I loved the roots.
There were deer everywhere. They were very tame and wanted the food that this man was selling for visitors to give them.
One of the MANY school groups we saw.
Dr. Brown and Dr. Gibson - both on the phone with elders who needed counseling. Thank goodness for mobile phones!
Sister Brown and the deer.
The kids were having a ball!
A pagoda - five tiered.

With all the deer, it looks like our backyard! Different variety of deer though. I would love to see those warrior statues in person. They look amazing.
