Familiar Sights

Thought I would show you my decorative shelving display. All these dishes and fun things were in a storage place. It was fun to put them out so we can enjoy them. Notice our little book that contains the messages and pictures from our family. We love looking at it - a touch of home.I put these pictures up on a wall so we can see our family every day. We love all of you! Today on our walk, I took some pictures of things that reminded me of home. Haven't been to McDonald's yet but it is nearby.
There is even a Baskin-Robbins! The National grocery store is where you can buy almost anything and it is labled in English.
It was even fun to see the Dunlop Tire store. Think I will ever be able to read the Japanese characters??
And of course, Starbucks is everywhere.
We bought a Tokyo atlas today so that we can expand our walking area without getting lost (or at least "as lost"). The streets wind and curve to fit where they were able to put buildings. It is actually very charming. You walk down lots of "alleys" that are really streets. You feel like you are invading people's space but they don't seem to mind if you are just a foot or two from their property. And you find shops and vending machines right in residential neighborhoods. We love looking out our window and watching people walk by or ride by on their bikes or motorbikes. Cars also manage to negotiate the narrow streets. This is not suburbia!
We had our entrance interview with President Stevenson yesterday. He is the North Asia Area President. He is young (compared to us). He seems very nice and says he is glad we are here. He served as a mission president in Japan earlier.
We also had a FHE with the other senior couples. We are the newbies but not for long. Several of them are leaving in June and we will be the "experienced" ones! We have had very good mentors and hope we can help those who come to replace them.

It's fun to see these favorites. Dave could live in Japan! Sushi and Baskin Robbins!! -- what more could he ask for?!! Your apartment looks great. You have a talent for decorating. Wish you had passed some of that along to me!!

Love you!!
Jill

P.S. All of the kittens are gone now. Kids are sad, but it will be less work for me!! (Thank goodness for Craig's List and KSL!) It was a good experience. We did have fun with them.

I have finally caught up on your wonderful posts! Mom, you are amazing and we are so lucky to read your fun adventures and see the pictures. I love hearing your point of view. Ty and Samantha read the posts with me and loved seeing Baskin Robbins and McDonalds! I'm so happy you and Dad are having a wonderful time in such a different world. How funny that you saw Michelle Andrews! It is a small world. Japan is really beautiful from the pictures! Life here is more overwhelming and busy than usual with Dustin being gone in Ohio for the week. I do have to say I've shed a few tears without you here so far- I guess I need my mommy still! I need to update my blog, but I always seem to be so tired by the end of the day! These grandkids of yours wear me OUT! (And all the yard work and housework I've been doing lately...) Anyway, thanks for giving us a taste of your experiences. It's been fun to help Paige and Dan get settled in your house, but sad without you guys there! Love you and hopefully I'll be better at keeping up now!
