Mission Pres. Seminar Part 1

Here we are ready to board the shinkansen (bullet train) to the 2010 Mission Presidents' Seminar in Osaka. White gloves and uniform - the train man looks very official.

The Goths and the Albrechts travelled with us.
Here is the view of the Osaka Castle from our hotel window!
And the morning view - what a skyline!

Here we are in the hotel lobby - It was the New Otani Hotel and it was fabulous!
Two of the mission mothers - Sister Tateoka and Sister Daniels.
Nara Trip - the deer are tame but aggressive!
A vendor with his little stove - I am not sure if he was roasting chestnuts or some sort of seafood.
School kids were there by the hundreds!
Elder and Sister Choi getting ready to enter.
I think we were not much of a disturbance for this deer.
Momoko and Elder Choi (what happy man!)
We had earpieces so we could hear the descriptions of what we were seeing.
In modern and ancient attire!
President Baird and the Wadas.
Lots of walking!
The Todai-Ji temple - the largest wooden structure in the world. Of course, this building is actually the third generation structure and was built in the Edo period (1615-1867). The width of the current building is approximately 33% smaller than that of the original structure.
Cute schoolgirls posing for us - they were trying to impress us with their English.
Cute Sister Jennings - always smiling and perky!
The burning incense as you enter the temple. (Temples are Buddhist - Shrines are Shinto)
The Great Buddha ("Buddha that shines throughout the world like the sun") It was consecrated in 752 but was damaged and repaired several times. The temple was built to house it.
Here is the model of what the buildings look like.
This hole in one of the pillars is the same size as the nostril of the Buddha. If you can crawl through it, you will receive a blessing. We saw several (skinny) people shimmy through it!
Look at the crowds!
See Part 2 for more of our wonderful trip!

I wonder what the laws are about hunting deer out there. We've had tons coming into our yard again, but they're not quite as tame as the ones you showed.

NO HUNTING! They are protected and thought to be sacred. But they do remove the horns on the males.

Loved it, Mom! Sorry I am behind on commenting. What beautiful scenery outside your window. The trees are so colorful and I cannot believe the deer are so brave! How fun to see such wonderful people you get to be with. You can see the happiness of the gospel shine in their eyes. I'm so glad you had a wonderful time!
