November 18th Mission Pres. Sem. Part 2
We visited Nara - a place we visited in June with the Browns. I will just show a bit of it here since I blogged about it earlier. Nara has many deer that are tame and wander the streets searching for treats from visitors.
Rickshaws always grab my attention.
A bride and groom were getting their wedding photos taken and the deer wanted to be in the pictures!
This was on the map - instead of saying "You are Here", it says "Now Place"!
Receiving our lanterns that we were to use as we walked up to some shrines that were lined with hundreds of stone lanterns.
Here's a sign that warns about the deer and what they can do.
The path of lanterns ...
Walking along in the dusk with our lanterns ...
These roots were so picturesque.
Read to enter the Tori gate to the shrines...
Look at the moss on these lanterns ....
The Dowdles and Pres. Daniels ...
Here's one of the shrines ...
Sister Watabe looking at a rock that is surrounded by a little fence. This rock was the place where lightening struck long ago.
Just a poster but I love the costumes.
More of the hundreds of lanterns ...
Notice the leaves ...
Note the headdress of flowers that the ticket taker has woven into her bangs!
Viewing the beautiful shrines ...
This tree is supposed to be 1000 years old.
Another poster ...
Just to show you how they protect trees, this one was allowed to grow right through the roof of this building!
Banners ...
Babies are brought to the shrine for a blessing when they are 31 days old by the grandmother. Here is a month old baby wrapped in grandma's kimono after the blessing.
Handing in the lanterns (they were later given back to us as a gift!).
Our wonderful Momoko and Pres. Dowdle (from Guam - hence the heavy coat) gathering the lanterns.
Dinner at a sukiyaki restaurant - at least there was a place to dangle our feet while we ate instead of having to kneel on the cushion while eating.
Here is the Osaka Castle in the daylight from our hotel window.
Here is the player piano that was in the hotel lobby. At night, a pianist was actually preforming on it.
Getting ready to get on the boat for our cruise down the river.

Ready to pass under the lighted bridge ...
After the cruise, walking along through the various booths selling food and other things ...
This dog was just relaxing as the crowds passed by his owner's stand.
Another vendor selling candied apples ...
President Stevenson and Elder Choi presenting a gift to Elder and Sister Evans who came from Salt Lake to give us the training.
One of the banquets we enjoyed - lots of Japanese food and some western style food also!

The Dowdles receiving a gift - we actually all got the same thing. It was a beautiful piece of pottery with the tree of life on it. It was made by a local member here in Japan. Beautiful!
More gifts that were placed on our bed as we returned to our room. The picture was taken at the shrines the day before.
I brought my quilt top to show the sisters. Sister McIntyre had given me the patterns soon after we arrived. She was amazed that I had finished it already.
Getting ready to check out after our wonderful 4 days.
We were well taken care of -here are a couple of the hotel staff - love the uniforms and hats!
They ushered us into taxis where we went to the station to get on the shinkansen (bullet train) for the trip home. Then we got another taxi that took us right to our apartment. We felt like royalty once again!! It was wonderful to be included in this seminar and be instructed and taught by four general authorities and their wives. I personally learned a lot and felt the spirit of this great work.

Wow, I bet you did feel like royalty! You both deserve it! Love the quilt top you made!
What an amazing experience to add to all your other experiences! We love learning from your blog each day!!
The sign about what deer can do to you is hilarious! :) I love the illustrations and what the person is thinking! Loved all the pictures, Mom. You and Dad deserved a nice getaway! The pictures are so fun to look at and I'm so happy you are having such amazing experiences together. Coming back to Utah will be a bit boring, except your grandchildren are never boring! :) Thanks for sharing!
