July 31st

Tonight we went to a street festival at Ebisu which is only one subway stop away. The Watabes had heard about it and invited us to go with them. We walked out of the station to absolute magic! There were hundreds of lanterns and a big platform where drummers and dancers were.
These children were all dancing in their yukatas (summer kimonos). Hundreds of people were also dancing in the street.

Old and young were in their native costumes and having a wonderful time together.
This big guy was really into it all.

Look at her hair!
Look at this older woman - she was so serious about her movements.
The children were so adorable!
The costumes were so beautiful.
The boys were also dressed up.
Here are the drummers - way up on top.
Cute little boy.
It was a perfect summer night - it had cooled down a bit and the sky was beautiful.
Love this face!
Cute little girl having a wonderful time.
This little boy was really dancing to the music.
A young family enjoying the festivities.
Quite the contrast in dress!
This boy posed for me - he is eating squid on a stick.
Here is my kind of refreshment - frozen yogurt.
The air was filled with different smells - all exotic.
Daddy with his baby in the front carrier.
Quite the hat!
Even a cotton candy machine!
I think these are called cottle fish.
What a little sweetheart!
Grilling the cottle fish.
Enjoying a treat.
A skinny ugly dog - but well loved.
A policeman watching the crowd.
I can't resist babies!
This face shows character.
The Watabes and Rulon.
Think I could get Dad in one of these?
It was startling to see this blond all dressed up.
Here is the escalator at the station.
Getting ready to get on the subway.
This is Ebisu - the Happy God. He must have been happy tonight to see all those happy people.

Love it! They really did go all out! And I have a feeling dad will have some new pjs when he's home...maybe just like the man in the pic?

Wow! I'd say that is worth the price of a ticket to Japan right there. What an amazing cultural experience to witness that!

Dad notes:
Actually, those are not cottle fish. They are the body of the squid with the tentacles cut off. They become separate delicacies. They are a bit chewy, I understand, but that is part of the attraction.

And I found out it is a "cuttle" fish. You know the cuttle bones that you buy to put in the parakeets' cage so they can sharpen their beaks? Now I know where they come from!!

What fun!! I am impressed that Dad is going and enjoying these excursions with all the crowds! I loved the picture of the boy in his kimono(?) with "crocs" on his feet! Cute! Also, Dad, you'll have to get some color on your legs before you go sporting this new addition to your wardrobe!!
